Week of 4/11-4/15 (Week A)

Monday, 4-11 Once you've created a blank workbook, save it as YOURNAME-041111.

  • In cell A1, type your name. In cell B2 type your favorite color. In cell C3 type your age.

  • Click save.

  • Please email me a paragraph you have written about what is different about Excel from Word and some possible uses you can think of for Excel.

  • Attach the Excel document you just made and send the email.
Tuesday, 4-12 Open yesterday's Excel workbook (or create a new blank one if you don't have yesterday's). The page orientation should be portrait. Make the Gridlines and Headings invisible. Add a background image. Add ANY INFORMATION YOU WANT to cells B1, C1 & C2. Experiment with any other page layout options to see what they do. Re-Save the document as YOURNAME-041211 Email me this document. Wednesday 4-13 There are lots of templates, both built in and online, that you can use in MS Excel. Today we are going to create a gift list. It is actually a Christmas gift list, but you can use it for lists of birthday gifts or other types of gifts you might give throughout the year. Click the Office Button. Make a new workbook. Search the planner templates as shown below. Look for the Christmas Present Planner

Fill in the fields. Notice that Excel will do the math for you... It shows you how much you'll spend.

Chances are you're not planning to buy gifts for anyone. In that case: Just make it up!

ASSIGNMENT:

  • Fill in the template (using real or made-up people and gifts). Use at least 3 people for each category (you do not need to fill in the "email" columns).

  • After finishing, read the two sheets below. Try changing the size of some cells on your planner. Experiment with the word wrapping function. Try performing the insert functions on the second sheet.

  • Email me your work!

Thursday, 4-14
My little flowers,
I'm sorry I'm out again today. I have some things I need to take care of... terrible timing.
Just in case I don't get to see you until after the break, have a super Easter... eat some jelly beans for me! (And please be nice to whoever is covering this class!!!)
Love,
Ms L.

You have seen a bit about using Excel. You know how to manipulate the cells in a workbook. So what? Well... let's see some more of what Excel can do for you!

Please create a graph using the following data:

10 people are surveyed to find out if they prefer sour apples or sweet apples. 7 said they prefer sweet and 3 said they prefer sour.

Your chart will need a column for apples with one row for sweet and one row for sour. It will also need a column for numbers of people.

Friday, 4-15
Blogging Day

Look back at your posts so far. Has there been a major theme among them? Is there a common thread holing them all together?

Come up with a keyword you can use to search that theme. Then, do a little research. See if you can find other blogs (not your classmates' blogs, however) that also address your theme.

Try Google Blog Search!

Write a new blog post today and make 3 links in it to direct your readers to the similar or related pieces you read today.

How? Highlight a word or picture in your new blog post. Click the button above your blog editing window that has an icon which looks like a link in a chain over the earth. Paste the URL you wish to link to in the box that pops up.

TA-DAAAA! You've made a link to another person's blog! Probably this is a person you have never met and will never meet... but that's the cool thing about blogging. You can make connections to all sorts of people with common interests.
